Some fun numbers about games played during Dosember
12-31-2024
Hey everyone! First of all I want to say Happy New Year to our AU/NZ friends and anyone else on the Eastern Hemisphere!
Also I want to say a big thank you to anyone reading this for making DOSember great, and as this has been my first year participating, I was so excited to finally be able to do it. (I didn't start streaming until Feb. 2024, but a lot of you I've known for years.)
I really appreciate DOSember because it kinda of gives me the "holiday" feeling that Christmas just doesn't anymore, so it's a pleasure to be able to do it and I look forward to it in the future.
With that said, some of you know that I have been tirelessly trolling as many DOSember streams all month and trying to record every single game played, and by whom, and many other data points. Nobody asked me to do this, I just decided to do it. I am at lunch right now but when I'm off work today, I will post it for everyone to see!
- I know it won't be perfect and I definitely missed some things but I'll just explain some of my methodology now while I have a few minutes.
- I did not include the contest games, like Pizza Worm or Skyroads (even regular Skyroads) it would've just been too much, and these games would've been "most played" by default.
- It doesn't matter how long a game was played, if you booted it up I tried to count it. Even demos counted.
- I did NOT however count software that wasn't a "game" at least not intentionally.
- I did NOT differentiate between the "Christmas Version" of a game and the regular version. For example games like Jazz Jackrabbit & Jetpack were played way more than you would probably expect...for this very reason.
- If a game has "episodes" I didn't count those, unless they were released as a standalone game. (ex. Biomenace episode 2 would not count because the full version contains it, but Commander Keen "Episode 2" would because it was released separately.)
- Along the same lines I did not consider expansion packs (for example the many expansions to Duke Nukem 3D) as separate games.
- I also, obviously, didn't include games that were streamed under the DOSember tag that weren't DOS games, however if a game was like a remaster of an old DOS game (say Monkey Island for example) I did count it.
OK guys, the Data is in, I'll follow up with a link to a (hopefully uneditable) google doc but here's some stats. As of now, to the best of my knowledge and abilities described above (which are of course imperfect I know I missed some things,) I've cataloged how many streamers, and unique games were played in DOSember.
- I documented 248 unique streamers who streamed a DOSgame and were either signed up on the DOSember website or used the DOSember Twitch tag. *(Side note: A lot of streamers who were signed up and DID stream did not use the tag - it helps with visibility!) *Second side note: There were people who signed up who, as far as I can tell, didn't stream, or had no vods and/or I missed them, or who didn't actually play DOS games so weren't counted in my data & that is why this number doesn't match the 312 that the website reports.
- There were 939 unique DOS games played.
- 243 of those games were played by more than one person, meaning 696 games were uniquely streamed by just one participant.
The top ten most played games were:
- Doom - 18 players
- Duke Nukem 3D - 15 players
- Jazz Jackrabbit (including the Xmas episode, which likely contributed to this placing) - 14 players
- Loom - 13 players
- 4-way tie between -Lemmings (including Xmas Lemmings), Sam & Max Hit The Road, Heretic, Prince of Persia - 11 players
- 3-way tie between -One Must Fall 2097, Command & Conquer, Indiana Jones And The Fate of Atlantis - 10 players
- 5-way tie between -Duke Nukem, Duke Nukem II, Day of the Tentacle, Theme Hospital, Jill of the Jungle - 9 players
- 4-way tie between -King's Quest II, The Secret of Monkey Island, Warcraft Orcs & Humans, Jetpack - 8 players
- 9-way tie between -King's Quest I, King's Quest III, Alleycat, Heroes of Might & Magic II, Commander Keen 1, Fallout, Alone In The Dark, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake. - 7 players each.
- 9-way tie between -King's Quest IV, King's Quest VI, Shadow Warrior, Commander Keen 4, Warcraft 2, Space Quest 1, Blood, The Dig, X-Com: UFO Defense - 6 players each.
Yes I know this means we have 38 games in the "Top 10" but they all deserve it. Interesting to me that the trend seems to be Boomer Shooters and Lucas Arts Adventure games in particular were big hits, and the fact that DOSember coincides with Christmas probably boosted games like Jazz Jackrabbit, Jetpack, and Lemmings. The King's Quest games, which the exception of V and VII all made the top 10 and were mostly the only Sierra games to do so. Just a random note, Leisure Suit Larry performed horribly - Only 3 plays of Larry 1 and 1 play of Larry 2 & 6. I guess some things don't age that well eh?Now on to the Dosemberists who played the most individual games, here's the top 10:
- Sakanakao 97 games
- SodawaveLive 86 games
- Emmxyzzy 73 games
- Sonneveld 59 games
- SpiderMwa 44 games
- Carcenomy 38 games
- TerrorVan 35 games
- DoctorCDCS 34 games
- Cyningstan 30 games
- Sfinxi 29 games
Cheers till next year DOSemberists!
